Daily Outfit: Lovin the Lava

Warning! These are not glam shots.  This is some ol rag I threw on over my bathing suit to head down to a secret beach we were told about. And the Teva sandals do nothing for it, I know! And I know wearing the wrong shoes just kills an outfit.  We are staying with at a friend who lives here and she told us all about the great local spots.  It was really overcast and nearly raining however we headed down this lava road anyway to find the beach.  I thought the contrast of the overcast and the lava would be great with this flower print.  I found this dress at a thrift store awhile back and it was longer so I shortened it at the waistline with the intention for it to be a little less like "Little House on the Prairie".

I mainly post these cuz I like the background color contrast.  We are heading off Hiking today so will post some pics later!!

The beach we finally got to after walking about 1 mile along lava trails (hence wearing the Teva's!!)

Letters to my Body

Common among women and men is body issues. And one thing that I've noticed in particular in athletes is how common eating disorders are (anorexia and bulimia) due to pressures to be leaner and faster.

I recently saw this resource called Letters to my Body on another blog and thought I would share it with you as a way to also stimulate some discussion.  While I personally haven't had an eating disorder, I have always been self conscious about my body.  I am almost 5'10 and have always been alot taller and bigger than my friends.  I remember going to my best friends house for dinner when I was younger and her mom would always scoop more food on my plate and jokingly say "Eat up Hoss"  (from the show Bonanza).  I always felt BIG. I always thought maybe people would like me more if I was small and cute, like my friends.  So instead, as a way to fit in, I became very athletic and strong.  I could play sports and keep up with the guys.  That was my way of making the best of it and it was easy since I was an only girl among brothers.

Over the years I gained freedom around my body, my sense of self and how I dressed.  I began to play around wearing more fun clothes, heels, jewelry and color!!  I have even been able to make a difference for others through sharing with them about how I have transformed this area of my life and coaching them and encouraging them in many different ways through the leadership program I lead.  Check out Letters to my Body and see what you think.  While I have not read through the whole thing, it looks like some good food for thought.

Daily Outfit: Orange ya glad to see me?

I am in Hawaii, really!! I know this orange wall looks like it could be anywhere, but its true, its a building here in Kona (and its not the same one from yesterday!!).  To be honest,  I am playing around alot with photography and have been having a challenge getting the light right.  It's very overcast, soft light during the days and it makes things sortof dull looking.  This is taken after a 1 hour run out along Queen Kaahumanu Hwy.  Not fancy, but convenient and somewhat sporty- the halter style is better for me than small shoulder straps, and higher waisted shorts- these are  kindof paperbag style waist but is hard to see and are better on me than low waist.  I was thanking the fashion gods when higher waisted pants and skirts came back since those fit my hourglass better than other styles.  The turquoise bangle is my new best friend.. its made out of 1 piece of turquoise (unless I am a total sucker...) and I love bangles, so there you go.   If you know this is a hoax please tell me so I am not wandering around in bangle awe!!! Aloha!

Daily Outfit: Make the Best of IT

I'm baaaackk!  Yes, I have a temporary computer so I am back in action. You have probably guessed this about me already, but in case you haven't, anyone who has the determination and discipline to do long distance triathlons (Ironman) is the kind of person who makes things happen.  So I am making the best of it. This dress, in cooler circumstances would get a wider belt and some nude shoes with heels (I brought some, but way too impractical here).  But given that this week is all about preparation for Ironman World Championships, instead you get the dress as it came off the hanger and paired with purple teva flip flops.  Not the glam of other fancy ladies I have seen, but this is over my bathing suit, and right after a 2 hour workout so this is as good as it gets for today!!  Believe me, I am just happy I can download pics and catch up with you all now!! xoxo j

computer in the sky

My computer won't turn on. No downloading photos. No outfit updates. Can you tell I am not impressed? Sending love from the iPod...uuurrgghh
Hope the computer Dr. can help tomorrow.

What to Wear Ideas: Booties

I love the booties and skirts look.  And I have told myself that I can't wear them because I have thick ankles (supposedly a fashion no-no for me- SIGH).  However, yes, thank goodness somewhere, anywhere, there is a HOWEVER (I am saved!!!) I am reminded of an excellent post by Angie of YouLookFab that has made me determined to find a cute little pair of booties to keep my skirts company.

For those of you who may have not considered getting on the bootie train, you may want to read: "Wearing booties with skirts and dresses".

Daily Outfit: Frizzy

Day 2 Kona.  See how frizzy my hair is? See the rings under my eyes?  We just swam 2 miles of the 2.4 mile swim route.  Needless to say, after being in the saltwater and the heat my hair is totally out of control and I will have goggle mark indentations under my eyes for a couple of hours!!  We just came back for lunch and fiance is going to ride for 2 hours out where we will meet me at this really great beach.  I have a really cute polka dot and striped bikini that I will wait to show once I have evened out my triathlon tan (sports bra tan on the back, brown legs up to the length of my bike shorts, and farmers tan on my arms!!).  I love the dress I'm wearing, is cotton but a bit low so thank goodness for safety pins!!!  The halter style helps to even out my shoulder-to-hip ratio.

Will be over to visit you all tonight xxoxox j

Daily Outfit: Getting Settled

Aloha!! Today we swam 30 min of the race course (ocean waves GALORE!!), then did a run through lava trails. It's so humid I just want to live in shorts and tank tops- BUT I have all these great outfits to wear just for the blog :) so I have to figure out when to wear them!! Part of the trouble is this is an exercise focused holiday so fitness clothing is the most important.  At 6:30pm the sun just disappears at the snap of your fingers.  I had to play with the camera for this night shot.. a casual comfy babydoll t-shirt dress for a homemade dinner at the dome home tonight.  I have funky jewelry to go with it but kept it simple instead.  Down below, my best pic of the day.  I need an outfit with these colors!!!

Daily Outfit: Red Like my Eyes

Let me tell you about something I consider illegal.  I was up at 3am.  Did you hear me? 3am ladies. All so we could catch the shuttle to the airport for our flight this morning.  Needless to say, I am now here in Hawaii with a 3 hour time difference (yes, we get an extra 3!!) and my eyes are about as bloodshot as this nice Hawaiian flower.  We are staying at a friends dome house just outside of Kona and her garden is unbelievable.. and guess what??? I packed light so I could bring my tripod.  I'm a dork, I know, but I've designed  my own "digital photography bootcamp" for this week while the fiance is focused on his race prep.  I have to admit, I am quite excited about the great backdrops you will get to see.  And this shows you how much I love you... I am doing it all for you--each and every one of you (especially Colette and Rita MWAH)!!!  So, sorry no full outfit today, you would only be sorry for me and how worn out and bedraggled I look... stay tuned dahlings.. fabulousity comes tomorrow!!!  ;)

Daily Outfit: Heading to Paradise

Hi friends!!  Today I am busy packing for our trip to Kona!! Woo Hoo.  Fiance is competing in the Ironman World Championship there- for anyone who doesn't know, its a day long race that includes 2.4 mile swim followed by 112 mile ride followed by 26.2 mile run.  We both did Ironman Canada this year and he placed 2nd in his age category (there were 2700 athletes!!) as well as qualifying to race in the World Championships.  We have been to Kona for this race before, this time I am just there as a spectator.  I am going to be reporting live :) from Kona, Hawaii so stay tuned for more outfit fun from a tropical location in a few days from now.  I will wave to you all as we fly over!!!  Be good and keep looking good til then. xoxox j
